On Tuesday, SADD students hosted Sgt Scott Myers (our National Guard rep) for a Texting & Driving Events for students in grade 9th-12th.
Sgt Scott Myers brought in pedal cars in for the students to experience the dangers of texting and driving. He had the kids do the route 3 times: 1st to try out the pedal cars, 2nd time trying to text and drive, and 3rd wearing goggles that impair your vision. "Road hazards" were also a part of the course to simulate an animal or pedestrian entering the roadway. The road hazards consisted of Henning SADD students rolling balls across the course, dropping pool noodles in front of the vehicles, etc.
Students also had the opportunity to try 3 different types of goggles to simulate being under the influence of drugs/alcohol or drowsiness. The kids could then try tossing a ball back and forth and walking a straight line.
Sgt Scott Myers also did a short presentation at the beginning discussing the dangers of texting and driving and showed the video "Shattered Dreams" about a mother who was killed by a distracted driver.
